Maybe I live in the wrong part of the country?

People in your very city make it on much less than you do. Because you aren't aware of them doesn't mean that they don't live a good life.

No one is crying poor. People are simply saying a family can make it on much less.

What do you care what people spend their money on? Do you get tips at your work from the people that pay your salary? That's what is being done when you tip a mailman. They sign up for their job. It's a choice.

How is your mail service? Any problems?

it's fine.
The guys that pick up my trash do their job also. They work in the cold. I don't tip them either. Do you tip your trash man?

The streets here are clean, I'm not hunting those guys down.

The neighborhood park is in good condition year round. I'm not tipping those guys either.

I'm not saying you should tip them. My guy goes out of his way and delivers my mail to my door in an apartment building. There are 10 apartments, and I'm the only one he does this for. Wanna know why. lol If they go out of their way or you never have problems, they deserve something, even if it's just a card. A server brings you food and beverages, and you tip them. These people bust their butts every single day bringing you your stuff through all types of weather and you find it crazy to give him even $5 a year and a card. Clearly it's not a requirement, but a nice gesture none the less.

Thanked. It's obvious this thread had attracted the same few tools that like to argue just to argue.[/quote:1gdsba8p]

And it's brought in the same ******** that always respond to certain members arguments.

I've had a PO Box for years, which the majority of my mail is sent. I don't even see the person at the house.

I work at the post office at the distributiion center and just want to say people like me want to thank everyone that uses our services. I want to say I do not tip my mail person and feel that it is a individual choice to tip them like it is for good service at a restaurant. If you do not receive the service you want, do not tip. The job should still be getting done in top notch fashion weather you tip them or not..

Just my two cents

It's pretty lame to argue against others leaving a tip/gift. Like has been said many times, it's not a requirement. There is no need to get hostile over it. There is really no reason to try and explain why no one should do it. It's not like we don't know how much they make. They make FAR more than I do right now, yet I'm still going to give him something. Some people do and some don't... big deal.

Exactly. We used to give our old mailman a nice bottle of wine each year. He appreciated it. This year is the first with our new mailman. Not sure what we'll give him, don't know him well enough to know if he drinks. But if we go with wine and he doesn't drink he can always regift it

Then why the hell did you start the thread asking the question in the first place?

To see if anyone tips their mailperson for Christmas.

People were giving their reasons for tipping / gifting them which are acceptable but those that disagree don't need to explain. It makes perfect sense now.

My hostility is from a self righteous "law enforcement" individual that makes statements like, "It's obvious this thread had attracted the same few tools that like to argue just to argue."

People can do what they like. I make more than a postal worker as does my wife. I'd rather give the money to charity than give it to someone that gets their pay directly from my check anyway. Yes, the USPS receives a government subsidy.

It's sad that you think so lowly of someone simply doing their job. It's not about how much money they make. I guess you just don't understand that. It's simply a generous gesture to let them know you know they are doing a good job. I guess you just aren't a giving person.

Nope, I give to those who are in need. The post office workers aren't in need, they have a job, and a good one at that. Besides, It's exactly that... A Job and that's why they are being paid for it.

Nobody is saying they are in desperate need of it. This has completely been turned into something its not.

All I have been talking about is a Christmas gift. A Dunkin Donuts gift card. A card with nothing in it
that just says Merry Christmas for cripes sake.

The original thread title said "tip", so people are discussing it as a tip.

I am still just flabbergasted. ::shakes head::

For all those of you saying they have a gov't job, get paid well, blah, blah. The average
letter carrier makes about $44,000 a year, with the majority of them being in the $38,000-39,000
range. While that may sound like a lot to some of you still in college, its not enough to support
a family where I live.

The P.O. has also had MASSIVE layoffs this year, reducing their workforce by 1,000s. So,
essentially, each remaining postal employee is doing 2 or 3 people's jobs. I mean, my local
P.O. is now staffed by exactly 1 person, and she busts her ass. But I'm sure you
don't believe me, because you've been led to believe that its a cushy gov't job.

I've made around $75K this year, down from $90K last year(self-employed, that is pre-tax & expenses)...if I could get a job driving a jeep around 6 days a week on a standard mail route and make $44K; I would take the job tomorrow!!!!!!!!

And I would not expect a tip in any way, shape, or form.

Hell...they make more than I did plumbing.Yikes.My question is...do they really deserve the pay?I don't think so.
44k isnt that much. I dont see a problem with that, Its like $4000 a month dont think there getting rich.

Dude...I was making less than that and living like a freaking King. Not so much now though. In any case...the kind of money these people make, even after taxes, here, will afford them a nice home and a brand new car and cable television every month.I wish I could make that much delivering mail.I'd make a lifeling career out of it.Pronto.

It reminds me when I used to get paid to work security at a Golf course...they paid me....gave me money...good money...to drive around, all over the place, in a golf cart, all night long with no boss and nothing to do...as a college student.

paid me

That's suuhweet! That's how I like it.I don't need to have a boss breathing down my neck.As long as I know my job...I will do it and don't need to be watched.I am not the type to slack off.Which is why I would love a job at the P.O. .I'd be home early every day.
