That's suuhweet! That's how I like it.I don't need to have a boss breathing down my neck.As long as I know my job...I will do it and don't need to be watched.I am not the type to slack off.Which is why I would love a job at the P.O. .I'd be home early every day.[/quote]

My neighbors both husband and wife are both postal workers, and I can tell you no matter how good you think you are you will still be watched. No matter how fast you go they will still push you to do more. You may be able to do 2 routes in the time it takes another to do one, but you know what. They will want you to do 3 routes instead.

As for everyone getting crabby...lets just put it this way...only people like us or people who really depend on the mail system the most would even have the notion to tip or give a gift to a postal worker.A postal worker is no different from a Cop, a Fireman, the person who checks your groceries out, the guy at blockbuster renting you movies etc.But since a lot of us really depend heavily on the mail(and in some cases almost exclusively)that is the only reason that a lot of the people who said yes voted that way.Otherwise...I don't think a lot of folks would even bat an eyelash when they said no.The fact that money is tight, the economy is bad, and these people make more than I do and I don't utilize their serivce much more than a normal person would who didn't collect cards makes me say no.

For sure. But what I mean is I don't like people to try to sneak up on you to see if you are doing your job.I used to work at a company that one of the foremen was like this.I hated that guy.He knew me for about 4 years but he would still try to sneak up behind me and see if I was working. He knew damn well I was and he also knew it would be done right.So...I am not sure what he ever hoped to accomplish. At first I figured he was just checking on me but after he did it over and over...I just made a game of it and pretended I didn't see him and then all of a sudden I'd turn around and go "Hey...what's up.". Then I'd turn around like nothing happened. It kinda pissed him off.I guess he didn't like being surprised. But he never told me anything.I figure if you have a guy who you know will work...let them work and leave them be unless you need something or unless you need to check in with them.Constant hawking around is unecessary.

Edited, pretty sure it would continue some sort of argument in this thread (or spawn a new one).

I didn't answer, because i have a PO Box. Being stationed overseas and in the military, they are super careful with everything, so nothing gets delivered to your door.

predatorkj ,

Those type of bosses you explained are the type that need to justify their jobs. Their bosses are coming down on them, so they need to check on you. Its just the way it is.

For all those of you saying they have a gov't job, get paid well, blah, blah. The average
letter carrier makes about $44,000 a year, with the majority of them being in the $38,000-39,000
range. While that may sound like a lot to some of you still in college, its not enough to support
a family where I live.

The P.O. has also had MASSIVE layoffs this year, reducing their workforce by 1,000s. So,
essentially, each remaining postal employee is doing 2 or 3 people's jobs. I mean, my local
P.O. is now staffed by exactly 1 person, and she busts her ass. But I'm sure you
don't believe me, because you've been led to believe that its a cushy gov't job.

I've made around $75K this year, down from $90K last year(self-employed, that is pre-tax & expenses)...if I could get a job driving a jeep around 6 days a week on a standard mail route and make $44K; I would take the job tomorrow!!!!!!!!

And I would not expect a tip in any way, shape, or form.

Hell...they make more than I did plumbing.Yikes.My question is...do they really deserve the pay?I don't think so.
44k isnt that much. I dont see a problem with that, Its like $4000 a month dont think there getting rich.

Dec - $3,388.56
$5,404.23

$2,933.12
$5,669.78
$5,399.51
$6,581.38

This is from my main company that pays me...I aint getting rich, but the stress level is enormous. Also, thanks Obama, you've been great...your scare the crap out of the entire world and I wake 30% less.

You should try being in the military.I make less then your lowest month EVERY MONTH.

Though, I do understand i have healthcare and a roof over my head......but the risk outweighs the pay (not complaining, just sayin').[/quote:29rhgifl]

That's all I was thinking about when average pay came, how much I made when I was in the military  . But then, I wasn't in it for the money. Still was very little.

False.

My mother always tipped our mailman as a kid. And we got the usual mail, nothing crazy.

She also taped cash to the trash cans around Christmas (this was back when you paid for trash pickup with checks taped to the trash cans)

Seriously dudes, the mailman is a bluecollar job. It's Christmas, toss him/her a tip!

I agree. My aunt and uncle have always given Xmas gifts of some sort to their mailmen, for over 35 years that I know of that they've lived in their current home.

Just out of my own interest I spoke to a recruiter about being a nurse in the Army just a week or so ago. W/ loan repayment, sign on, etc, for three years it comes to something between to 100 - 110k / year.

Maybe as an officer, as you would need to be an E-8 with a ton of years in service or any type of E-9 to even come close to that kind of money in the Army. And that is 17-18 years into your Army career.

And please, show me the numbers they gave you to make it 100-110 thousand a year.

40k / year student loan repayment
10k (30k split up / 3 years for sign on bonus)
42k salary
There was something else that I am forgetting that was in the 10-15k / year range.

I would qualify for officer status which I think for a nurse is O3.

"ACTIVE DUTY HEALTH PROFESSIONS LOAN REPAYMENT PROGRAM (ADHPLRP)
As a participant in this program, you can qualify for up to $120,000 to repay your nursing school loans. Under this three-year program, you could receive up to $40,000 annually for qualifying educational loans. You may opt to accept both the an accession bonus of $10,000 and the ADHPLRP."

so the bonus is 10k not 30k.

according to the pay scale the monthly is
3540.30
42483.6 yearly

I don't know about the other pay / if available those things you were talking about.

3 years would wipe out my student loans. Then again the real possibility exists of being over seas . Being away from the wife and our boys would be a real killer.

So without the additional certifications it'd be 85 and change. Yes I have that much in student loans, I've got 3 bachelor's.

It amazes me how little enlisted soldiers get paid. My friends that went to West Point have expressly told me that in the end, they'll make more after they retire working in the private sector than in their career in the military.

The ADHPLRP I had never heard of before, so it may be newish. I had never heard of them offering that kind of an incentive to officers before (and the ones I spent a length of time getting to know and learn from, never mentioned getting an incentive to join, like a bonus or anything).

You learn something new everyday, thanks Justin.

And, I will admit, it is hard being deployed and away from your family. I leave again in the beginning of next summer.

I wasn't trying to prove you wrong. I was trying to see if I was being lied to by a recruiter. It would be very awesome to be student loan free after 36 months. I am very unlucky and would a sure candidate for sniper fire.

Also, I'm quite clumsy and would be able to find mines better than those dogs. Well I could find one mine.
I appreciate what you do. No matter how much it pays you, it's just not enough.

You may be unlucky, but you wuld probably, if deployed, end up staying on the FOB at a medical station to tend to wounded/sick.

Or, you could land with a medical unit that doesn't deploy (like at one of the larger hospitals) and never have to worry about it for your three years ;)

Not trying to sway you, just sayin'.
