My thoughts.

1- Knowledge is power
2- Rosen made an offer the gentelman accepted (refer to point 1)
3-Capitaliam at its finest.
4- The way Rosen handled the itmes was not right aside fromt hat he did nothing wrong.
5- Refer back to point 1.

Just because the strong prey on the weak and the informed prey on the uninformed, doesn't make it right. That's the point of this thread, it's exposing a slime-ball. You can dig what he does and respect it all you want, but there are two types of people in this world, leaches and hosts... and just because the dude is more informed than a lot of other people, doesn't make him any less of a leach on society.

After this post, I am officially done trying to make you see the error of your logic.

This old man had an ENTIRE HOUSE filled with this collection. Where in the hell do you think it all came from???????? He bought it. Every last scrap of it. I will unequivocally gurantee you that he knew damn well that MM was not the only avenue for selling this collection.

He bought everything in the collection.

He knew what it was worth to him.

He accepted the offered price.

There is no room for debate here. If you don't like Rosen, fine, good for you. Neither do I. Point is, he did business here, plain and simple. Jus because this old fart decided to sell his collection doesn't mean you can use it as a soapbox to stand on and say "See? Look. He screws people over!" We could see and hear everything he was doing. Is he a jerk, yes. Did the guy accpet his offer, yes. End of story.

That's like saying all those people who were ripped off by Bernard Madoff were at fault and what he did was acceptable because they made the choice to give him their money... yeah, your logic is FAR superior.

How is MM a leach ? Granted I see where him "being bad for the hobby" stand comes from but really MM is good for the economy. This is a perfect example. The 80k MM gave to the man will now be out into the economy. In economics 101 you learnt he 80/20. 80% of income is soent and the other 20% is now saved. So now that the man has roughly 60k to spend and do god knows what with is now being put into the economy and not sitting in MMs bank account. Another thing you learn is that each dollar is statisticly used 5 times, meaning each dollar has 5 dollars of worth before it is saved, so really its like the man is pumping 300k into the economy. Hardly a leach in my book. Do I like how he handles himself and how he acts? heck no ! Just my opinion knowledge is power and power is money, thats how the world works.

As for the Bernie Madoff reference, yes it is those peoples fault they should have investigated what they were doing with their money a little more deeply. Its not like it was the 1st time Madoff has gotten in trouble.

I'm talking about the principal of it. You and others are saying it's okay to screw people over if they are not smart enough to stop it... and I'm saying that is BS.

Not nearly the same. The dealer at a show knows, or should know, what they are selling. Same with eBay. To compare that to asking a professional who does this for a living to come to your house, look at your stuff that you don't know is worth and make you a fair offer, is ridiculous. If I get a steal on eBay, I'm not lying to the seller to get it, so you are wrong.

How is this ANY different? You say "a dealer should know what they are selling"....a man collecting baseball cards his from the early 50's to late 60's SHOULD KNOW as well, right? I mean that is by your logic.

C'mon man, don't be so damn naive. You think he had so many sets and didn't know what he had?

No. The man was lied to, bottom line. Like I said, if I get a steal on eBay, I didn't lie to get it. Your principals are out of whack if you think it is okay to lie to someone to make money off them.

He payed $1,500 for a $10,000 set. That was just ONE of the many sets.

ok man, that's not lying. that's the SAME thing as you paying $10 for a misspelled auction that normally sells for $52.

think of it this way: he offered $1,500 for a $10,000 set.

What if a buyer has a set with a BIN for $10,000 and you offered $1,500 and the seller accepted?

Same thing.

Point is: You don't know why the seller didn't say "NO WAY, I need at least $8,000 for this set" He accepted. He called this Mr. Mint dude. Mr. Mint said "I'll pay you this." The seller said "Yes" with absolutely NO HASSLE. PERIOD.

a card is only worth what someone will pay for it. so his "$10,000" set is in that case a $1500 set. the price was offered, considered, and accepted. mr mint read aloud the big names and their condition. that doesnt seem real shady to me! if mr mint had given 110% of book how in gods name would he turn a profit? i guess that doesnt matter as long as you would be happy! so i am wondering if your argument is made from lack of business sense, hatred of mr mint, distrust of the bald, or moral superiority...

Not to defend Mr. Mint, but let us look at the other person involved in the transaction.

We do NOT know his personal or financial situation.

His wife could be in the hospital, home could be in forclosure, retirement fund full of Lehman and Citi Stock, pension wiped out..... We just don't know.

What we DO know that there are not too many people able to pay $80 large in cash for a collection that took decades to build. This guy may have only paid $25 or so for some of those Mantle cards back in the day.

Had he contacted Wolverine or Burbank would it have worked out any better?

I assume that when selling to a dealer you will usually only get about 15%-20% in return anyway maybe a little more if the cards you are selling are in demand (superstars, very popular set, etc.). There is certainly extra value in getting the cash right away as opposed to waiting for weeks or months before getting paid.

Mr Mint is Mr Mint, but thats not what made me feel bad for the seller.

What made me feel bad was that this guy probably spent a lifetime collecting that stash, probably bought the packs near the release date of the original sets. The jersey seemed VERY sentimental to him. Then, he basically gets taken for it, and Mint tosses shat around like its worthless to the guy. He's shouting out numbers and I all I could think about was the time he probably spent in that basement organizing and collecting everything.

Its really a shame, because Im sure he lost a lot of his life in that sale.
So very true...you get a thanks.
