Yeah...this same guy who said and I quote, "With a hitter as good as Reynolds(Mark Reynolds from the Diamondbacks), nobody in America should care either(about strikeouts)."

What a crock.I got backlogged on my sports illustrated because I have been chipping away at the Football preview issue(yeah I suck...the season started weeks ago and I am still reading the preview  ::facepalm:: ) but I finally get to the one with Mariano on the cover last night and I read that article and it makes me wonder why I even have a subscription to a magazine with such reporters as Joe Posnanski and Selena Roberts.Seriously...his arguments are dumb for trying to glorify strikeouts.

He uses examples like this..."In June he struck out three straight times against the American League ERA leader(Zach Greinke). The fourth time up he hit a long homerun."

"Four days later he was 0 for 3 against Seattle's Felix Hernandez, and his fourth time up he hit a long home run."

How does this help your argument Joe?He ended the season with what...47 or so homers?(I can't remember the exact number.)Yet he struck out over 200 times(well over might I add).

I am sorry but if you have to strike out 3 times before you can get one hit, homer or not, you are not a productive hitter. They might as well have some speedy guy hitting in your spot who can get on base.At least he will have more than one shot a night at scoring a run.Power isn't everything.Especially if your only hitting 50 homers a year and there are 162 games a year.Especially if there is a good percentage of times(1/3 of your at bats) where you're not even putting the ball into play. The same can be said for Howard. Its why Pujols will stay the better hitter until Howard has a breakout season in not getting struck out.Pujols can hit for power and average and he is a defensive whiz as well. You can't ask for much more.

Being in the playoffs or even winning the world series means very little for any player. We have hashed that argument out before.People think it should matter but it doesn't.That's a team thing. Now if you go into the series and shine, kudos. But its still a team thing.Your team got you there. Not you.So Howard being in the series or a playoff game means very little.I am sure Pujols isn't happy about sitting at home but hey...it doesn't diminish his skills.

Edited:To say that what I mean is all players want to go to the postseason but not making it doesn't undermine or diminish their skills as a player.

Howard benifits also from Having Utley and Rollins..
Pujols has who?? Izturis, Eckstein, Shumaker, Ryan..C'mon...
Have you ever heard of Matt Holliday, the all-star player who hit .313 with 24 homers and 109 rbi this season?
He hits behind Pujols.
Or Ryan Ludwick, who hit 22 homers with 97 rbi this season?
He hits behind Holliday.
Now regarding this thread, I have no comment, because there are so many idiotic statements involved.
or Mark Derosa who had 24 HR and 90+ rbis
Holliday was there for 3 months...not his whole career.. Howard has had two studs to bat around since he came up..ALbert has had who??? Luddy last year... This year..Holliday for 3 months?? Really...DeRosa..his 10 HR's and 28 Rbis gave Pujols protection..are you for real???

This post would have merit say if it was Ryan Howard>Sammy Sosa, otherwise it is silly. This will be funny if the Phillies are eliminated and this blows up in your face, ala Sam Banks.
Nothing really blew up in my face.

ummm see Derek Jeter or George Brett. that line wipes out any kind of relevancy to any of your posts you ever made. You and your 5 paragraph responses. Quite possibly one of the most absurd things i ever heard.

I was about to say the same thing, but figured someone else would be smart enough to post it before I did.Even more impressive, the year Pujols won the World Series he even had less protection.Howard is surrounded by 3-4 All Stars minimum year after year.
