Just wondering what you all think of a situation like this (no it didnt happen to me)

Youre looking through a $5 discount box at a show and stumble upon a 1998 Crusade Randy Johnson /25. You know the last one got $250.

Obviously, the seller has no idea they actually sell very high. Now, do you tell him and give him the card or buy it with the only intention of selling it (no PC for that one).

I love digging through discount boxes, gu, auto, inserts, whatever and have found many cards worth a ton more than what I bought it for but never like the example above.

I know some might tell the dealer but many would not. Whats your side?

I'd buy it and probably not say anything.

If I was the seller, I would appreciate it if someone clued me in....but in the end it's my mistake. I would sell it at the price I had listed. If you don't know your stuff, it's your loss.

As a seller it is up to you to know what you have. By putting it in a $5 box and acknowledging it when someone asks it means you are completely satisfied with the $5 sale. Now of course as a seller you would like someone to tell you, but there is no incentive for a buyer to do so other than to feel good.

All that said, Im pretty confident I would buy the card and not look back.

i had a similar experience, guy was sellin a 93 topps finest tigers team set for like 5 bucks, only the alan trammell was a refractor. i told the guy about it and how rare the 93 finest refs are. anyway this was mostly because i already had that refractor lal.

I would put the card back, peering over both shoulders, making sure no one saw it. I would then ask the dealer for his phone number and make up a story like, "I am interested in some of your cards, maybe I could call you when I have more money."

I would take his phone number with me to the nearest pay phone, hopefully one that I can still see the dealer. I would call him and tell him that he has a $250 card in his $5 box. "It's the red Randy Johnson Crusade, from 1998 Donruss. Hurry!" I would probably disguise my voice like the dad from Finding Nemo. Hopefully this would give hima sense of trust. I would watch from afar and make sure he found the card and put it aside.

I would feel so good deep inside that I helped out a sportscard dealer without making him feel like he made a mistake. No red faces, no embarrased looks, so clearing of the throat, no apologies.
The dealer would be happy, and feel the rush of relief, and that's all that matters.

I never understood the whole idea of people letting the dealer in on the fact that they have something priced too low? Not trying to start an argument, i'd just like someone to enlighten me on the thought process. I understand mismarking something, but if you marked something at a price and you are set up at a show, you are looking to sell your stuff, that's the point of you being there. If you tell someone a price, you are happy to get that price for you card, that's why you are there. Someone clue me in if I am missing something. I have my share of small steals, nothing that is ever going to make me a 100+ bucks, but some nice things. I do not feel the need to tell the dealer that he is selling me something too cheap. I am there to buy, and he is there to sell.

buy and get out the door as fast as possible. Its the dealers responsibility to look through his cards and know whats what. If he cant do that then he deserves losing that money. Thats how i see it

I touched on this the other night in a thread. i help a friend of mine that runs the local shop in pricing cards. I will periodically go through his stuff to make sure that cards aren't OVER or underpriced. I know some of you may say thats wrong, but with the vast array of cards he has, its hard to keep on top of every single issue.....especially with the values changing overnight in some instances. He also has a candy store on the other half side of his shop so he also deals with that too. I have found that most cards have dropped and I help reprice them accordingly but there are a few cards that were priced too low.

As to your original question, I would probably tell the guy that this is a pretty nice card and ask him again if it is priced at 5 dollars. If he concurs, then I will make the purchase. I would then probably check the hot sheets at the post office to make sure that I wasn't on the list for grand theft cause thats a steal.

As long as you confirm with the dealer that it is indeed the right price no one would turn it down.

There is obviously no problem going to help a friend or acquaintance make sure their cards are priced correctly. There are very few, if any, people who would tell the dealer the card is worth 50x what he is asking. Now maybe someone would see the card in a $5 bin and say hey, I'll give you $20 for this or something like that. Make the dealer very happy and still get a great steal, or maybe that is just rubbing salt in a wound in your conscious

I think you're on to something there. I would definitely offer a little more than what he had it priced at. I would probably offer him a tad more and thank him for a great card. But thats how I am. I used to work at a shop and really appreciate what dealers do to help keep the hobby afloat.

I would buy it too and then sell it, and then maybe tell him if I see him again
+1 and if i was the seller, I would congratulate him on the find, while kicking myself in the butt and laughing about it.

Now if it was a 10,000 instead of 250, then I would want to cry...
