Had a discussion with my dad today, who noticed that my baseball card habits are winding down lately. Gave him a couple reasons, one being that there aren't a whole lot of prospects I'm enamored with, and two being that there are no products out there that pique my interest, at all.
I actually went to a hobby shop about 3 weeks ago, and left with NOTHING. As far as I recall, that never happened before. At least a box of Bowman... but no, nothing.

So given the reasons I gave, he asked:

What was the best release ever?

Tough one. Very tough. The Perfect product has not been released as far as I know. Everyone has a different idea of what would be considered the best.. but there must be some kind of near unanimous, or at least majority ruling, on what the best ever was.

I talked a bit to a couple people. So far it might be Absolute Memorabilia.

Absolute Memorabilia is what I said, but I am not a set or player collector by any means....

IMHO, it has to either be 2005 Absolute......

.....or 2005 UD Ultimate Signature Edition

I tend to lean more towards Absolute

Re: Best Product of All Time

alright. I'm gonna need a blurb or 2 on WHY you post what you post.

2008 prime cuts is almost disqualified for not being licensed, right?

some of the other products I see listed seem a bit one dimensional.

then again, I don't know everything about every product, so maybe I'm missing something.

Well Kev, if you want multidimensional, what about...was it 2001 Leaf Rookie and Stars? The set that featured Great American Treasures. GU from specific historic games (with said object featured on the back).

To me, 2005 Absolute is THE product for players collectors.

-tons of autos
-jumbo game used
-4, 5, and 6 piece game used
-jersey, pants, bat, patch, shoe, hat,
batters glove, fielding glove, chest protector
-multiple photos/teams for some players

well that does sound pretty interesting. not to mention I'd imagine the rookie checklist isn't too shabby.

It appears the problem may lie with me. I was on a baseball card sabbatical from about 1996 - 2003. Sounds like a lot of good stuff was released when I wasnt looking.

As long as your player has a multitude of cards in it. Haf did not, so I would have to go with 2005 Prime Patches or 2008 UD Premier. I love both of these sets, but likely wouldn't if the player I collected was not a part of either one.

I don't think Prime Cuts is disqualified.

2008 Prime Cuts had great cut autos
Awesome patches
Great hall of famer autos
A great lineup of rookie autos

Even when you pulled a mediocre card from the product it still wasn't too bad, and it didn't feel like you were robbed afterwards.

Re: Best Product of All Time

When considering best products, I eliminate any set with ugly silver stickers.
So Absolute Memorabilia, Prime Cuts (and most Donruss products) are not on my list, despite how many "hits" a box may have.
This is just my personal opinion, so please don't bash me for disliking those popular products.

I'm a set builder and love retro themes, so Topps Heritage and Topps All-Time Fan Favorites are my top products.
I wish Topps would bring back ATFF.

best of ALL TIME, and nothing before 2001
how can you NOT have the first year of topps 1952...that is the all time best set of all time
or T206 or crackerjack

Although I voted for Absolute I'll throw another product in the ring....

Topps Tribute (one of the first high end brands that delivered high end player swatches. Design was simple but appealing. Before plain swatches were over produced. You know you were going to get a decent pull before you broke the pack! Those were the days ;) )
