Technically there's not much difference between these sellers (or middlemen as you say) and the sellers (technically middlemen) who bust and sell on eBay (yet another middleman).
Who should make the most profit, the people who make the stuff, distribute the stuff or sell the stuff? Obviously all on the chain are going to try to max their own profit. Funny that all of this doesn't seem to affect the value of singles.
I think you're right that there may be a point where critical mass is reached and Topps sells more *singles* directly online to maximize their own profit, but I don't think that would happen with boxes/cases. When that happens, links on the chain will disappear.

Especially since there are many card shops that use those sites to gauge pricing. So these sites go NUTS on their pricing the day they receive infromation, and four months out, it screws all of us.
