Allthough hairs are going to be split about what makes for the greatest hitter of all times, I'll throw my hat in the circle and make a case for....

Hammerin' Hank!

This guy was simply unbelievable with a stick!

3771 Hits!!!
755 HR's!!!
2300+/- RBI's

And a .305 lifetime BA!

Not to mention he compiled these stats when it was a pitcher dominated MLB! I do think Pujols is of the same mold though. However, until he comes near these types of stats he will fall to the waistside of good ole' Hank Aaron in my opinion, as does everyone else...

I have yet to read any of this thread save the firts post, so I'm interested to read it all and see if anyone else agree's with me.

If we are talking pure 'good eye' hitter, then it's eithor Rose or williams.

For modern I'd take Ichiro..

If you are talking about pure good eye hitters, Rod Carew has to be included in the conversation. He was amazing

Some of the answers put out here give no regard to era (George Sisler).

Top Three of All Time

1. Ted Williams
2. Babe Ruth
3. Barry Bonds

No one else is particularly close to these three, in my opinion.

Ichiro over Pujols is laughable. Ichiro gets more CHANCES to hit than Pujols as well because he's a leadoff hitter, Pujols' BA was about 50 points higher this season.

Saying Ty Cobb and others are not particlarly close to your top 3 is laughable

Right now? No. By the time his career is over? Very possible.

Oh and without hesitation Pujols is a better complete hitter then Ichiro.

Maine of course......
I of course vote Ted, and had he not missed 3 full seasons (43,44,45) and the majority of 2 others (52 and 53) plus part of 54 and 55, his numbers would be off the chart!!

He'd be at 3500+ hits 650+ HR's and perhaps his career average would have exceeded .350. Those numbers might be low considering he would not have had to "re-acclimate" to MLB each time he returned from the service.

Cobb, Hornsby and Ruth are certainly in my conversation.

Comparing generations is obviously difficult due to a variety of factors, including, but not limited to- competition (no blacks first part of century, globalization today), travel methods and accomodations for teams, conditioning and lifestyle changes, length of season, rules for pitchers (spitballs, height of mound), specialization of pitching (closers today).......

kind of amazes me that no one says babe ruth. i understand teddy's
ability to hit, he was amazing, but if you just look at the stats over the years
i have always thought ruth was simply the best. to dominate the way he did
in the 1920's, where no one was even close to him, speaks for itself.
ted had great years, but he had dimaggio hitting then and several others
that put up semi comparable statistics. for me, no one has ever come close to ruth.

+1

Babe was out homering almost EVERY TEAM IN THE LEAGUE!!! That is complete domination that hasn't been seen since....

I personally don't think statistics/honors before blacks/non-whites were allowed to play mean very much. I base most of my "all-time great" opinions relative to AFTER segregation was abolished in baseball... It is the only way it can make sense, in my opinion.

K guys here's what I have to say:

Best hitter of all time: Ty Cobb

Best power hitter of all time: Babe Ruth

Best overall hitter of all time: Ted Williams

Nuff' said.

And if you don't agree with me, well then you don't know your stuff. ;)

I'll never agree that if Babe Ruth or Ty Cobb had to play against the best of the best, and not just the best of the WHITE players, they would have been as glorified and productive as they are/were.

At this time I do not view Pujols as even the greatest Cardinal of all time. Stan Musial and his 22 season of hitting .331 would get my vote
