I agree with Musial see my post above yours. but Cobb deserves to be on this list

Albert Pujols is not even the best Cardinals hitter of all time--- that honor goes to Stan Musial,,,,, and when Albert's done it for 15 years we'll compare how his stats are doing versus Stan,,,,,,,until then keep his name out of the argument when the phrase "All Time" is being used,,,,,,,

In NO PARTICULAR ORDER
,,,,,,, cases can be made about what the term "hitter" is-- but since the OP never defined "hitter" for us,,,, here's a few possibles,,,,,,, arguments can be made for them all,,,,,,I define "hitter" as an all around batter === must hit for average, to be able to move the ball to all fields, to hit for power, to have meaningful at bats, and to do so over long periods ( 12-15 years or more ),,,,,,

Ruth
Aaron
Mays
Williams
Musial
Gehrig

No one else deserves to be even mentioned,,,,, at least in my humble opinion,,,,,

Rage on folks--- I am going to work,,,,

Some of the answers put out here give no regard to era (George Sisler).

Top Three of All Time

1. Ted Williams
2. Babe Ruth
3. Barry Bonds

No one else is particularly close to these three, in my opinion.

Ichiro over Pujols is laughable. Ichiro gets more CHANCES to hit than Pujols as well because he's a leadoff hitter, Pujols' BA was about 50 points higher this season.
I'll eat crow on this one. However, I don't think it is laughable. I failed to factor AB's into the equation. Pujol's gets a hit every 2.99 AB's vs. Ichiro's 3.02 AB's.

Anyway, neither of these guys are in the Top 5 of All-Time.................yet, if ever.

Here's my Top 5:

Ty Cobb
Ted Williams
Rogers Hornsby
Babe Ruth
George Sisler

Everyone's opinion is just that, thier opinion. I believe you have to compare players by the era in which they played in.

You can solve this easily by asking yourself this question. Who do you want up with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the 9th inning of game seven of the world series losing by one?

I'll take Barry Bonds :)

Ted Williams, obviously.

If it were tied I'd want Ty Cobb though.

Barry Bonds added another woeful chapter to his playoff history. He entered this series with a career playoff average of .200. He was even worse against the Mets, batting .176 in four games. Bonds came to the plate with a chance to win Game 2 in the 10th inning and Game 3 in the ninth inning. Mets reliever John Franco struck him out both times. Bonds went 0-for-4 in Game 4 and struck out twice against New York starter Bobby J. Jones. Fittingly, Bonds flew out to center to make the final out of the Giants' season.

San Francisco won 4-3 at Edison International Field of Anaheim (now Angel Stadium of Anaheim) to take a 1-0 lead. Barry Bonds hit a home run in his first career World Series at-bat.

Bonds again hit a mammoth homer with 2 outs in the 9th inning, off of Troy Percival.

Barry Bonds hit another home run, becoming the first man to homer in his first 3 World Series games.

He homered again in Game 6.

Pujols will be in the discussion if he keeps his pace up for the next 10 years. Until then...

For now, Ruth, Williams, Bonds, Aaron, and Cobb are the best hitters of all time. You can make a strong case for any of them.

Uh sorry Bonds wasn't able to come in relief of Russ Ortiz.

HR's were against KRod, Ramon Ortiz and Jarrod Washburn - a lefty.

Fair enough, but i'd go with Ted Williams

Nearly 5 years isn't "a little time". That's a significant amount of time.

Williams missed all of 1943, 44, and 1945 and almost all of 1952 and 53 due to military service.

Can't go wrong with that choice, and over his entire career I might agree with you, but having seen Bonds 01-retirement I can't imagine a more feared or more disciplined hitter. The man never swung at a ball.
