Question for the board

I am in talks to get a high end card and I asked a question to the seller as it appeared in the scan that the edges may be a little questionable. This is a Topps Five Star card which if you have not seen one, is a pretty thick, higher end card. When I asked him about it, the response I got was this: "Yes, there is white showing. It's just how the set is. I have over 20 quotables and they all look like that." What is the thought process on this? Is he legit or just lying about it? I only have 1 Topps Five Star and even though it is not in hand, I still remember it being quite crisp. Thoughts?

5 star edges are pretty iffy

All thick cards seem to get minor damage to them.
