I agree right now, but if he dips to .330 and Braun continues and maybe gets to .315 it will be a tough call. He has more SB's, HR and RBI's and SLG%

Some of the advanced metrics that take ballpark into effect have McCutchen ahead, but Braun is more efficient on the base paths (20/26 in SB while McCutchen is a poor 15/24). Defensively you need to give the CF the edge.

If I had to bet, I'd put my money on Braun since he has been great pretty much his entire career, while this is the first time McCutchen has performed at this level and he's cooled off the last 4 weeks (.281/.375/.398 with 2 HR and 1 for 3 in SB).

Then again Kemp had better stats than Braun last year and lost because of the Brewers playoff run, so the Pirates superstar that leads them to the playoffs for the first time in decades(?) will get a lot of weight put on it.

Ten days later, McCucthen is treading water while Braun surges. He went from +10 to +13 in HR (37 to 24), is even in Runs Scored, knocked off 10 points in OBP (.388 to .408), and improved his SB % (22 of 28). On stats alone, Braun has the edge right now.

I'll sidestep the PED debate and make my vote for McCutchen based on the one point that everyone had to trot out against my boy Matt Kemp last year. The Pirates are in the playoff hunt, the Brewers are going nowhere. Thus with both having relatively similar stats, the award goes to the guy playing for the contending team. I don't like it since that philosophy is what cost Kemp last year but you're absolutely right I'm going to trot it out this year when it will cost Braun this time around.

The Brewers are actually on a 11 for 14 run, and not that far out of the wild card, st. louis did it last year, you never know and Braun is carrying them.

Posey has similar numbers to McCutchen besides the SB, same OBP while having a BA .11 points lower, 5 more RBIs, 6 less homers, his team is in the playoff hunt as well and he is a catcher. Right now I see it as a two horse race between Cutch and Posey with Braun not that far behind, but Braun's team not being in the playoffs is going to dramatically impact his chances, add in the PEDs, his chances are really hurt.

Actually I know that, but just saying it is possible with how they are playing. Braun is keeping them playing tough while the Pirates are dropping each day.

Yep not for long though. First .500 then the 2nd Wildcard spot. Hey a fan has hope.

I didn't realize Braun was so dominant in the wRC+ column.

McCutchen is still going to win.
