Joe D. over Ted Williams. Although Williams may have been a better hitter, Joe D. was widely considered the better all-around player.
Strongly disagree. Ted lost alot of his prime fighting in two wars. He would've had some crazy stats.

Johnny Bench at Catcher.

For those dogging Pete Rose, he is the All-Time Hit King. Obviosuly he was able to do it for a long period of time. That aside, my favorite thing about Rose was how hard he played the game. I will never forget watching him run, not walk, but run to 1st after being walked. He gave everything he had every game. There are a lot of players that could learn something from him.

Joe
Joe,
My point was there are many other hitters I would take over him. And yes, he is not in the HOF so he shouldn't even be in this thread.

Scott,
I get exactly what you're saying. You don't have to like my guy, it's okay, I guess you're still alright in my book. ;)

I'm not saying that there weren't better hitters because there were. I was just saying that he had true grit and played very hard. I think that should be taken into consideration as well.

Lastly, I agree with you that if we're only going to use HOFers than anyone who isn't in the Hall should not be on the team (Maddux for example), but if non-HOFers are going to be allowed, then I think Rose belongs in the discussion.

What, no love for baseballreference? ;)

Appreciate you naming a HOFer, lol.

Geez Scott. I didn't bring up Rose, I just mentioned how hard he played.

The only player I named for the team was HOFer Johnny Bench at catcher. I don't get any love for naming a HOFer too? Sheesh.   ;)

Comment was not aimed at you. ;) Thank you also

Just wondering though...what position would you put Rose at? Even if he was allowed to be in the lineup, I don't think he would fit in...He played most of his games at LF and 1B and there is no room in those spots

career season averages. .314 41 HR 133 RBI

I think there might be 2 or 3 other players that have better career average season stats.
he's in, but no where near the top.

look at his numbers. who is ahead of him??? im not taking fielding into account. Im talking soley on hitting.[/quote:v2n2gtlu]

In that case, I say my boy Greg Gagne makes the list. I'm not taking hitting or fielding into account, I'm talking solely on playing shortstop for Twins teams that have won the World Series. :P

Tough call. I would think maybe 3B would work because that's where he played in 75-76 when they won the Series. That's a very tough question to answer.

Also I would like to apologize on behalf of Nolan Ryan for having such a low winning percentage. I'm sure he feels guilty for not putting together better teams to support him.

That's the best thing you've ever said Ryan!

also, pitchers that are STRIKE OUT pitchers, always seem to have a fair amount of walks. They throw a lot of pitches.

This "Top Tier" idea... Does it mean there's only one seat? I don't think so.

To me, Ty Cobb is the be all end all of greats... the alpha and omega, but it's easy to see how and why others would argue Aaron, Mays, Ruth and even Jackie Robinson (much more than just a "good" player) and Pete Rose (Who we all know is in the HOF in our hearts ;) . as people usually point out, It's the Hall of FAME and not the "Hall of Players that have ABSOLUTELY the best stats.

Randy Johnson.

Most dominating and intimidating pitcher in the 2000's.

Not to mention 4 Cy Youngs and almost 5000k, will hit 300 wins this season, and a career 3.26 era.

He should be on this list no questions asked if Maddux is

I absolutely worshiped him as a kid. I've met him a couple times and he's never been anything but nice, and he's a great TTM signer which is always a nice thing.

You could make an arguement for him,

but I would not place him above Sandy Koufax

Yup. And Koufax. There are only a couple of guys (Pedro and Big Unit) who had a stretch as dominating as Koufax did.

Craig
Steve Carlton
Tom Seaver
Bob Gibson

not sure if they would/should all make it, but they are in the discussion for sure.

Not sure that anyone could argue with he and Bench!
question i posed earlier...

everyone (well i think everyone) should agree that Yogi and Bench are the top 2 Catchers. there could be some debate, but those two are widely considered the best.

but, are they 2 of the top 25 to ever play baseball? i don't know if they are. it's hard to compare apples to oranges, really.
if the cut-off to Level 1 of the HOF is 25 men, where would they fall in line?

I agree with you on this. If you are going the all-time best by position then they have to be in there. But if we're talking the best to ever play the game, then I don't think those guys are in. I think you gotta put Berra & Bench in Tier 2

....sorry I missed that post the 1st time....you do have 2 slots for catchers so if you are filling a full roster they have to be the 2 catchers. If you want top 25 regardless of position than that's an entirely different matter. So which is it???

Well, just had an epipheny (sp?)- Josh Gibson now comes into the mix for both top 25 and one of the 2 catchers....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josh_Gibson

I'm going with Berra and Gibson for the 2 catchers based upon Berra's WS successes.........
